FDA has announced several recalls over the last two weeks due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, and patterned recalls based on undeclared allergens.

On Wednesday, FDA announced an expansion of Old Europe Cheeseā€™s voluntary recall of Brie cheeses, announced September 30, 2022, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The expanded recall includes baked brie cheese.

Last week, FDA announced a voluntary recall of ā€œZero Fontalā€ cheese, on grounds that the product failed to declare the presence of egg. The same week, the Agency also announced a recall of Dianaā€™s Milk chocolate Banana Babies 10.5 oz, on grounds that the product may contain undeclared peanuts, and Momyer Distributionā€™s recall of Dark Chocolate Almonds because the product may contain undeclared milk.

To help avoid product recalls, we recommend companies ensure compliance with cGMPs, applicable FSMA requirements, and labeling compliance. It is also important to have recall plans in place and mock recalls. In the event there is a situation where a product recall, market withdrawal or stock recovery needs to be evaluated, the Company can thoughtfully and strategically evaluate and execute a recall with relatively minimized business disruption.
